Building a Website for a Local Financial Advisor: Modernizing RLJ Wealth’s Online Presence

Creating a Website for a Small-Town Financial Advisor
RLJ Wealth is a financial advisory firm with a simple mission: help people plan their financial future with clarity, trust, and personal attention.
Their existing website didn’t reflect that. It lacked modern design, clear messaging, and the credibility needed to compete against large institutions in Central Florida. Over six weeks, I led UX research, UI design, and development to create a website that felt professional, approachable, and uniquely local.
Project Goals
RLJ’s leadership wanted a website that would:
Modernize the brand using elements from their style guide
Build trust by presenting financial guidance in a clear, approachable way
Showcase downloadable educational resources to increase form submissions
Present RLJ Wealth as a local, relationship-driven alternative to big institutions
Marketing materials were provided by New York Ave Agency, and together we shaped the direction for the redesign.
The biggest challenge? Standing out in a crowded advisory market with over 300,000 advisors nationwide.
To do that, we needed a website that felt personal, professional, and unmistakably local.

Research & Discovery
To understand RLJ’s audience, we conducted:
1:1 calls with community members
Direct-message interviews
Reviews of financial reports
Competitor analysis within the Central Florida region
A few key insights emerged:
1. Local advisors were preferred over big firms.
People felt local advisors offered more individual attention and genuine care.
2. Prospects wanted clarity, not jargon.
They valued advisors who could explain complex financial topics through simple, step-by-step roadmaps.
3. Educational content mattered.
Buyers leaned toward advisors who demonstrated knowledge through articles, guides, and consistent communication.
These insights shaped the website strategy.
Strategy & Game Plan
With our research in hand, we developed a plan focused on clarity, trust, and ease of navigation.
1. Highlight the “financial roadmap.”
Community members repeatedly used the word roadmap, so we built the site around a visual step-by-step process showing how RLJ guides clients from Point A to Point B.
2. Publish educational content consistently.
We added a blog section to house local financial insights, a key factor in building authority and encouraging return visits.
3. Collaborate on a local digital marketing strategy.
Working alongside a partnering agency, we planned email newsletters, quarterly messages, and social posts to drive traffic back to the website.
4. Simplify the user journey.
We removed overwhelming content found on larger institution sites and focused on a clean path that drives users toward contacting RLJ.
The entire experience was designed to feel less corporate and more personal — exactly what their audience wanted.

Results After Launch
Within weeks of relaunching the new site, we saw measurable improvements:
73% increase in overall site visits within the first quarter
33% growth in organic traffic within two months
Improved engagement from social media and email campaigns, thanks to a clear content strategy
The website became not only a digital brochure, but a foundation for community trust-building.
Conclusion
This project went far beyond a simple website redesign. RLJ Wealth wanted to be more than “another advisor” — they wanted to become the trusted financial resource in their local community.
By pairing UX research with strong branding, educational content, and a local-first strategy, we built a digital presence that reflects RLJ’s core values: education, clarity, personal attention, and long-term planning.
I’m grateful to have partnered with RLJ Wealth and look forward to supporting them as they continue to grow and serve their community.
