Designing a Streaming App for Teens: My UX Process Explained

As a parent, I always pay close attention to what my daughter is watching. Even with parental controls and content filters, inappropriate shows or ads still manage to slip through. That frustration sparked an idea:

What if there were a single streaming platform designed specifically for children and teens—with cleaner controls, better content filtering, and age groups that actually make sense?

That question became the foundation of this concept project.

The Problem: Streaming Isn’t as “Safe” as Parents Think

Despite the wide range of family-friendly platforms, parents still struggle with:

  • inconsistent content ratings

  • weak passcode protection

  • filters that don’t actually filter

  • profiles kids can bypass

  • ads that show mature content

A survey from the Parents Television Council found that many parents no longer trust popular streaming services to keep their kids safe.

That insight became the driving force behind this app: A streaming experience that gives parents confidence—and gives teens content that feels tailored to them.

Research & Early Problem-Solving

I originally planned to design a full “all ages” app with categories like:

  • Ages 0–4

  • Ages 5–8

  • Ages 9–12

  • Ages 13+

However, deeper research revealed a major issue:

Each age group has drastically different preferences for layout, colors, and interface styles.

  • Young kids prefer light interfaces and bright colors

  • Older kids prefer bold, darker, more “mature” UI themes

Rather than build four apps in one, the design shifted toward a streamlined version made specifically for pre-teens and teenagers.

Another surprising insight: Teens watch more content on phones than on TVs.

Phones ranked highest, followed by desktops, then TVs, then tablets. This led me to narrow the focus exclusively to mobile UX for this project.

Expanding the Concept: Entertainment + Live Streaming

While refining the design, a new opportunity appeared: Many teens watch gaming streamers on Twitch or YouTube Gaming, even though the minimum account age on some platforms is 16. In real-world interviews, viewers ranged from 8 to 24.

So the app concept expanded beyond traditional streaming to include:

  • live gaming events

  • livestream creators

  • esports-style programming

This made the platform more versatile — something that could realistically compete in the future streaming landscape.

User Flow & Wireframing: Familiarity First

One of the biggest UX flaws across major streaming platforms is over-designing.Too many apps try to reinvent navigation, which confuses users and slows them down.

For teens especially, familiar patterns outperform experimental layouts.

My goals for the wireframes were simple:

  • intuitive navigation

  • clear content hierarchy

  • minimal taps to reach content

  • recognizable icons and controls

  • simple, structured screen layouts

This led to a layout style that feels modern but still instantly familiar — the kind of UI that doesn’t require a learning curve.

Final Thoughts

This project taught me just how different user preferences can be across age groups. The deeper I researched, the more I realized there’s a genuine gap in the market for a streaming platform that combines:

  • the safety and reliability parents want

  • the sleek, modern UI teens prefer

  • the live entertainment features today’s youth actually watch

I still believe an “all-in-one” platform that blends traditional streaming with gaming livestreams is inevitable. And when someone does build it…I’ll be waiting on that 10% check for the idea. 😉
