My Most Challenging Logo Project (And What It Taught Me About Branding)

My Most Challenging Logo Project

In over 14 years of doing design work, I’ve tackled dozens of branding gigs. But one stood out as the most difficult—and if you’re a small business or creative studio building your brand, the lessons I learned might save you time, frustration and money.

Why It Was So Hard

The client was a ski-resort startup. Everyone in their category used the same visual clichés: snow-covered peaks, ski lifts, snowflakes in logos. I immediately knew we couldn’t go there. I spent hours sketching, brainstorming synonyms—avalanche, cabin, scarf, ski boots, thermal rises. Nothing stuck. I even put the project down for a few weeks. Then one afternoon, of all places, I had the breakthrough—while brushing my teeth, go figure. I realized the ski path itself resembles an “S” shape. The resort’s suggested name was SnowDrop. It clicked. I sketched the “S” slope concept and everything finally took shape.

What This Means for Your Brand

  • Differentiation matters: Just like I rejected snowflakes, you must reject generic visuals for your business.

  • Start with concept, not color: I began with the shape and story, not the palette.

  • Challenge equals reward: Your most difficult brand projects often become your strongest assets.

  • Journey over product: Your logo (or website, or design) is a story, not just a file.

What I Did for This Client

  • Developed custom sketches, not leveraged stock icons

  • Created a unique “S-slope” mark which stood out among ski logos

  • Refined typography, space, and balance until it aligned with brand strategy

  • Delivered final assets, style guide & application mockups
